Tim & Chris, 58 Richmond Road

Behind 58 Richmond Road lies a remarkable “secret garden” of over 8,000 sq ft, hidden from view and rich in local history. Part of this land was once associated with the Victorian laundry drying fields that stretched across Round Hill before coming arable land and allotments. Today it forms a rare green sanctuary and wildlife corridor within the city. Over the past fifty years, the garden has been transformed from scrubland into an award-winning wildlife haven, featuring mature trees and shrubs, ornamental and wildlife ponds, winding paths, secluded meditation areas and a gothic-inspired garden with firepit. The lawn has evolved into a meadow, while a productive fruit and vegetable plot continues the site’s allotment heritage. Each spring, frogs, toads and newts return to the ponds via the historic Cats Creep green corridor, while birds and other wildlife thrive amongst the established planting, creating an extraordinary natural retreat in the heart of Brighton.

Sue & Laura, 106 Ditchling Road

Our garden is a little potted sanctuary. Our place to chill, relax, drink wine and feel fine. The garden is terraced and, due to us having no soil beds, it's completely grown in pots and containers, many of which we brought with us when we moved here two and a half years ago from London. We look forward to showing you our pots of paradise.

Our garden is for work, rest and play. It's a relaxed, wildlife-friendly garden for family and friends with ponds, wildflowers, roses galore and mature trees.

Julia, 85 Princes Crescent

An uphill jungle, this garden is full of exotic plants that were planted by a previous owner 10 years ago. At the top of the steps we have decking to grab the summer sun, with a little shade from the shed on one side and the hazel tree on the other. A north-west facing garden, we only keep plants that can survive on little sun in the winter - or we keep them in pots so we can move them to the south facing front garden if needed. A popular hang out for local cats, but that doesn’t put off a variety of birds, squirrels, and even sometimes frogs from visiting… not to mention plenty of insects, spiders, worms, and snails!

Our garden is a hidden gem, sandwiched between the railway trees and several gardens. It's beautifully wild, a joy for wildlife, always a job for us to do, but lazing in the swinging seat is always an option. We have uneven steps and uneven brick paths.

Monika, 58 Princes Road

My garden is my passion, and I love being surrounded by nature and plants. At my home on Princes Road, I designed the north-facing front garden two years ago to look beautiful year-round, using evergreens, ferns, and foliage suited to the shade, with flowers that I hope will be in bloom for your visit.

I had not originally planned to open my back garden, as it’s still evolving, but I’ve decided to share it too. It has become a small, natural oasis for pollinators, insects, and birds, with a wide variety of plants chosen to provide food and shelter, along with a few untidy corners where wildlife can safely thrive. I’m delighted to welcome my neighbours into both spaces.

Hoping that the roses and clematis last 'til the day...the honeysuckle and water weeds will surely be there. A garden full of scents in the sun. Come and see the colourful strip that hides between Roundhill and Sainsburys.

Jane, 55 Princes Road

Choose a bench and gaze on the chaos me and the hooligan foxes are making and unmaking. I plant, they dig; shame they don't do the digging before I do the planting...

I love plants & aim to attract pollinators and birds. Made a pebble pond for the birds to bathe - a few newts moved in so I've happily changed it around a bit to make a friendlier territory.

Walled courtyard garden on two levels (so a few steps to contend). Sheltered from cold winds so bananas, figs, vines and towering palms thrive. Home to my glass jewellery studio (with a ‘green’ roof & eco wetroom) which will be open to view. Lots of locally created sculptures hidden amongst the planting. Complimentary water/soft drinks for rehydration will be available.

A thousand square feet of open space with 27 steps of which only 13 have a handrail.
Constantly working to leave it untouched.
A quiet space for us and all our non-human residents and visitors.

The Round Hill Community Pocket Park is a volunteer-led green space located at the southbound bus stop at the junction of Ditchling Road and Prince's Crescent. The community space includes the following highlights:

  • Features: Four large wooden planters designed to be accessible to wheelchair users and children. Three planters feature flowering plants and bulbs, while the fourth acts as a community herb garden.
  • History: The project was a collaboration between local residents, ward councillors, and council officers. It was installed to provide a public green space and deter dangerous pavement parking.
  • Maintenance: The park is maintained by a team of over 30 local volunteers.
  • Events: The pocket park has hosted official celebrations, including the launch of Brighton and Hove Community Garden Month.

Sylvan Hall Micro Orchard

Planted during the 2020 lockdown, this micro-orchard and wildflower meadow in the north east corner of Sylvan Hall Estate is blossoming into a vibrant sanctuary. The relatively small green space was initially populated with 6 fruit trees through the Plant Your Postcode project, guided by the vision of our late Residents Association chairperson, Barry Hughes and helped by Roundhills' own Rob Stephenson. Over the last few years, a somewhat ramshackle team of volunteer residents has lovingly nurtured the site. Most recently, we’ve expanded our biodiversity by planting native hedgerow hawthorns and other tree whips, donated by the Woodland Trust. Today, it stands as a living legacy to Barry’s leadership and a testament to our community and looks forward to contributing to much needed pollinators and addressing food security in some small way.
