What is "South & South East in Bloom?"

South & South East in Bloom is the regional branch of the national Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom campaign. It covers a large area of southern England, including East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, parts of Dorset, and parts of Wiltshire. Communities, towns, parks, cemeteries, schools and volunteer groups are judged on much more than flowers—they are assessed on horticulture, environmental responsibility, biodiversity, sustainability and community involvement.

The campaign began in the 1970s and is one of the largest regional "In Bloom" organisations in the UK. Communities that do well at regional level may be nominated for the national RHS Britain in Bloom finals.

For a place such as Eastbourne or Brighton, participation typically involves:

  • Floral displays and planting schemes
  • Parks and open spaces
  • Wildlife and conservation projects
  • Community gardening initiatives
  • Street cleanliness and environmental improvements
  • Volunteer and resident involvement

If you have heard the term "South-East in Bloom", that is often used informally, but the official regional organisation is South & South East in Bloom.
